Intro to painting
by: Jonathan Hemingway
Painting dates back as one of the oldest home customization practices in history. Ancient Egyptians would express their social stature and wealth through intricate painting art forms on the exterior and interior of their homes. With pigments created from natural minerals and dyes, it was not an easy manufacturing process.
Fast forward thousands of years later, the paint industry has changed culturally as well as economically, yet still holds great value as the primary feature of a building aside from the construction model itself. The color that the owner chooses complements the design both inside and out and can even have emotional impacts on the perception of the living space. For example, light colors like white and cream, make a room feel larger and more spacious, while darker colors like brown, charcoal, or dark green, give the room a smaller, more cozy atmosphere. Here’s a continued list of the effects:
Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) give a energetic and inviting atmosphere
Cool colors (blue, green, purple) give a calm and relaxing energy to the room
Glossy colors reflect more light and make the space look and feel brighter
Matte finishes give a more subdued, cozy feeling to the room
There are many approaches to designing the “feel” pathway all throughout your home, schemed in artistic ways to give a more developed and sophisticated appearance. One thing however is in common, the importance of a professional quality paint job in executing your color choices. This is what makes the difference between a color scheme that is visually unappealing and a color scheme that blends seamlessly with the walls, shining its quality through the design. There is an extensive base of knowledge that goes behind painting entire home interiors and exteriors from pre-planning to hands on execution. Everything essentially has to go exactly right to ensure full, uniform coverage at a professional level, and that takes patience, consistency, good equipment, and coordination, things that we have and more at Hemingway Property Renovation and Repair.
Now let’s touch on our next topic, level of shine.
Each color comes in 5 different choices for the level of shine it possesses within the pigment. Each has it’s own effects and recommended placements throughout the home. They go as the following from lowest to highest:
Flat/matte
Eggshell
Satin
Semi-gloss
High-gloss
